Welcome to Heimdall Net's

Sending Money page

One of the most emphatic things I will say on this site concerns moving money over the 'ethers' of the internet.
!!!PAYPAL!!!
Paypal is a reputable and secure way of moving money from one internet user to another.  Paypal insures its users at both ends against fraud and items not meeting the expected quality.

True story:  My partner bought me a new tenor saxophone on eBay (She knows nothing of these instruments). When she received it, she put it away for four weeks until Christmas came around.  When I tried it, the instrument did not work and upon investigation, we found it would take a lot of work to get right.  In short, it was a lemon.  When we approached the seller, they were not interested in talking about it.  Via eBay, we were directed to a dispute resolution process with Paypal and eBay.

In the end, because my lady had paid through Paypal, she received much of her money back and can place the instrument back on eBay as a fix-up project for a tinkerer for a minimal amount, allowing her to recover all of her money, someone with the necessary skills and time to get an instrument and all parties to walk away 'clean' and happy.

Had she not paid through Paypal, her options would have been more along the lines of caveat emptor, or put another way,.. "what a pity!".

Before moving any money through the internet, sign up for a Paypal account.  Upgrade the account and you can take credit cards without having to be a business.  Their commission rates are so similar to the merchant fees charged by my bank that I use them in my other businesses for clients to purchase items from my commercial websites.

Do not get involved with sending cash, money orders etc.  Use a traceable way of moving cash.  Bank deposit is used frequently on auction sites.  This is obviously fraught with some danger, much of which can be mitigated by only communicating through the auction site so that they too have a record of the transaction on their servers.

Advantages
  • Immediate and convenient.
Payment is deposited directly into the seller's account.
You can pay directly from the item listing page.
  • No requirement that you use your credit card (you can transfer money directly from your bank account).
  • Sellers don't see your credit card number (it is safely encrypted through PayPal's server), which limits the risk of unauthorised use.
  • Automatic payment tracking.

  • Additional limited protection offered through PayPal's Money Back Guarantee.

Learn more about using PayPal.

Credit Card Advantages
  • Immediate and convenient.
  • Traceable.
  • Limited liability. Credit card companies typically provide some level of identity and purchase protection.

Listed below are links to some popular credit card protection policies:

Contact your credit card company to learn more.

Disadvantages

  • Since credit card purchases are generally protected by your credit card company, you must go through your card company before applying to the eBay Standard Purchase Protection Programme
Personal Cheques/ Bank Cheques Advantages
  • Traceable to a particular mailing address.
  • Provides proof of payment.
  • Covered up to AU$400 under the eBay Standard Purchase Protection Programme (minus AU$25 for processing costs).
  • Most banks offer a stop payment service if problems arise before the cheque is cashed.

Disadvantages

  • Sellers must wait for funds to clear.
  • Extremely difficult to recover in cases of fraud.
Money Orders Advantages
  • Traceable to a particular mailing address.
  • Provides proof of payment.
  • Covered up to AU$400 through the eBay Standard Purchase Protection Programme (minus AU$25 for processing costs).
  • Some services offer the option to stop payment if problems arise before the payment is cashed, but you don't always have this option.

Disadvantages

  • Sellers must wait for funds to clear.
  • Extremely difficult to recover in cases of fraud.
Escrow Advantages
  • Payment is held by the escrow service until you receive and approve the item.
  • For eBay transactions, you should only use eBay-approved escrow companies: learn more about how escrow works and which sites are eBay approved.

Disadvantages

  • There have been reports of fraudulent sellers using nonexistent escrow companies, so do your homework before using any escrow service other than eBay's recommended escrow partner.
Bank Deposit Advantages
  • Buyers deposit payment directly into the seller's bank account either online or at most banks.
  • Immediate and convenient.
  • Payment is deposited directly into the seller's account.

Disadvantages

  • Payment is difficult to recover in cases of fraud.

Tip: If you are unsure about using this option, you can request the seller's contact information and verify that it is consistent with the information on the bank account.

Instant Cash Wire Transfer (such as Western Union & MoneyGram) not recommend - eBay Australia prohibits the use of instant cash wire transfer services.

While sellers may offer this option, they cannot require you to pay this way. If you suspect a seller is trying to commit fraud by insisting on payment through an instant cash wire transfer, please decline to use it and report the seller to eBay.

Disadvantages

  • Difficult to identify and designate recipient.
  • Not traceable.
  • Generally, no recourse is available if the item is not delivered as promised, even if you used your credit card to send the payment.
  • Not covered by the eBay Standard Purchase Protection Program.
Cash eBay doesn't recommend paying with cash.

While sellers may offer this option, they cannot require you to pay this way. If you suspect a seller may be trying to commit fraud by insisting on payment only by cash, please decline to use it and report the seller to eBay.

Disadvantages

  • Not traceable.
  • No way to prove payment was made.
  • No protection against loss or theft in the mail.
  • Not covered by the eBay Standard Purchase Protection Program.

Who or What is Heimdall:

Reproduced here from the Encyclopedia Mythica™ is a summary by Micha F. Lindemans

I chose Heimdall as the identity of this site as it is my desire to see the advice herein protecting all from harm on the net as much as is possible.

The idea of a naming my site after a protector encompasses this desire.

Heimdall © Encyclopedia Mythica (Norse)

Heimdall is the god of light, the son of nine mothers (variously given as the daughters of Geirrendour the Giant or of Aegir). He was born at the end of the world and raised by the force of the earth, seawater and the blood of a boar. Because of his shining, golden teeth he is also called Gullintani ("gold tooth"). His hall is Himinbjorg, The Cliffs of Heaven, and his horse is Gulltop. Heimdall carries the horn Gjallar.

He is the watchman of the gods and guards Bifrost, the only entrance to Asgard, the realm of the gods. It is Heimdall's duty to prevent the giants from forcing their way into Asgard. He requires less sleep than a bird and can see a hundred miles around him, by night as well as by day. His hearing is so accurate that no sound escapes him: he can even hear the grass grow or the wool on a sheep's back. At the final conflict of Ragnarok he will kill his age-old enemy, the evil god Loki, but will die himself from his wounds.

As the god Rig ("ruler"), Heimdall created the three races of mankind: the serfs, the peasants, and the warriors. It is interesting to note why Heimdall fathered them, and not Odin as might be expected. Furthermore, Heimdall is in many attributes identical with Tyr.
