Online communities - like almost any other community, real or virtual - have a majority of honest people just trying to get by and a scattering of crooks and scam artists who have perfected the methods of getting money out of people.  The biggest tool a con artist (and some of them are truly artists!) is greed.  They make their target think that they are getting one over the crook, only to discover later that you can't really buy a genuine Rolex watch from a stranger, even if they did not know how much the watch was really worth at the time.

To use some wisdom from Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert™comics; Sarcasm often helps in deciding "what is more likely?".  For example, is it more likely that you are being set up for a true fleecing by a spammer with the social conscience of a mass murderer or that a total stranger sending an unsolicited email hidden by a nonsense subject line is really giving you a 'hot' stock tip that is going to make all your wildest fiscal dreams come true?

Let's start by establishing some basic guidelines for life and especially for the internet:

No deal is so good that you can not walk away from it!

Unless you are in some Hollywood 'B' grade movie where they have kidnapped your girlfriend/dog/favourite t'shirt, you should never let yourself get so tied up in a potential deal that you lose the option within yourself to get up and walk away.  It is a big world out there and if you're looking for a real deal, you will find one that will still be there after a good night's sleep and a solid 'gut check'.  Good deals are always out there; super fantastic and time critical deals to help you quadruple your money are also out there

If there is doubt, there is no doubt,.. walk away!

If
it sounds too good to be true, it is seriously unlikely to be true!

How many people have heard this old rule but still been bitten?!?!  No-one is going to sell you a dozen Rolex™ watches for $100, "because their brother-in-law who was a jeweller just chopped his hand off and has to liquidate his stock before the landlord kicks him and his five kids out on the street".  Sounds silly?  If people applied this simple rule, most con men would have to go straight!

Greed, urgency and pressure are tools of con-men the world over.

The only way you can get conned is to let yourself get conned.  A sense of greed, that 'big pay off', the 'big score',.. in real life it rarely if ever exists.

The best closing technique a salesperson will ever use is the, "Take Away Close"; this is where the salesperson tells you that the deal is off and MAKES YOU WANT IT, often just because someone is telling you that you can't have it!  "A free bonus only if you sign today", "for this weekend only", "never to be repeated prices!"

Classic Scams illustrating the "three rules" that originate from unsolicited emails...

The old Nigerian Bank scam is a classic.  Real life smart people still give a complete stranger their bank details so that this benefactor can "hide" some large amount there for a few months.  The origin of the money is deceased estate, government overcharges or anything else that could justify a few hundred million dollars to some sucker.  Otherwise fully functional and intelligent people actually believe in this day of internet banking that they will be given a % commission on these hundreds of millions of dollars!
Then the con artists will see how far they can push it and ask for money to help overcome the transfer difficulties, bribes or whatever they can think of. The suckers end up having their bank account cleaned out or used for money laundering AND pay for the privilege!

Another old classic is the Foreign Lottery scam.  A message is sent telling the recipient that they have just won the "XYZ" lottery and need to respond now to claim their millions of dollars in winnings.  Again, clear thinking, otherwise fully rational people get bitten by the greed bug.  Then they read that they were supposed to receive this email a month ago and only have a few days to respond or forfeit their winnings.  I think we can all see where this is going by now can't we???
If you did not buy a ticket in a lottery that you have never heard of, how likely is it that you have won it?  And to get your winnings, all you have to do is pay the duties, export exchange tax or whatever and give them your bank details and sit back and wait to be rich.

In summary, if you really feel a burning need to give away your hard earned cash,...

..email me your bank details now, Now, NOW!

If you want to keep your cash, apply the common sense of the above rules and stay smart.
(by the way, please do NOT send me your bank details)

Who or What is Heimdall:

Reproduced here from the Encyclopedia Mythica™ is a summary by Micha F. Lindemans

I chose Heimdall as the identity of this site as it is my desire to see the advice herein protecting all from harm on the net as much as is possible.

The idea of a naming my site after a protector encompasses this desire.

Heimdall © Encyclopedia Mythica (Norse)

Heimdall is the god of light, the son of nine mothers (variously given as the daughters of Geirrendour the Giant or of Aegir). He was born at the end of the world and raised by the force of the earth, seawater and the blood of a boar. Because of his shining, golden teeth he is also called Gullintani ("gold tooth"). His hall is Himinbjorg, The Cliffs of Heaven, and his horse is Gulltop. Heimdall carries the horn Gjallar.

He is the watchman of the gods and guards Bifrost, the only entrance to Asgard, the realm of the gods. It is Heimdall's duty to prevent the giants from forcing their way into Asgard. He requires less sleep than a bird and can see a hundred miles around him, by night as well as by day. His hearing is so accurate that no sound escapes him: he can even hear the grass grow or the wool on a sheep's back. At the final conflict of Ragnarok he will kill his age-old enemy, the evil god Loki, but will die himself from his wounds.

As the god Rig ("ruler"), Heimdall created the three races of mankind: the serfs, the peasants, and the warriors. It is interesting to note why Heimdall fathered them, and not Odin as might be expected. Furthermore, Heimdall is in many attributes identical with Tyr.
